Totteridge Fields – London Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve

Totteridge Fields is a seven-hectare Local Nature Reserve in Totteridge. The reserve comprises three ancient hay meadows—Nutt Field, Hen Mead and Nearer Slay Land—bordered by hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerows. Once producing hay for London’s horse traffic, the fields are now managed through traditional hay-cutting and conservation grazing with heritage cattle breeds introduced in 2014. The site supports exceptionally diverse wildflowers including sneezewort, devil’s-bit scabious and seven sedge species, attracting thousands of butterflies and hosting declining skylarks.

High Barnet

High Barnet, also known as Chipping Barnet, is a suburban market town, 10.5 miles north-northwest of Charing Cross. Built around a twelfth-century settlement, the name derives from Old English meaning “land cleared by burning”. The prefix “Chipping” denotes its historic market, chartered by King John in 1199 and still operating today. At approximately 427 feet elevation, it ranks amongst London’s highest points, historically serving as a major coaching stop on the Great North Road. The 1471 Battle of Barnet occurred nearby during the Wars of the Roses. High Barnet Underground station opened in 1872 on the Northern line.
