Created by the 1777 Enfield Chase Act to compensate villagers for lost grazing rights, it features predominantly oak woodland with hornbeam and beech, alongside acid grassland clearings. The site is bisected by the East Coast Main Railway Line and contains Beech Hill Lake, formed by damming Pymme’s Brook. Wildlife includes white-letter and purple hairstreak butterflies, sparrowhawks, tawny owls and amphibians. The common hosts Monken Hadley Cricket Club and forms part of the London LOOP walking route.

Totteridge Fields – London Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve

Totteridge Fields is a seven-hectare Local Nature Reserve in Totteridge. The reserve comprises three ancient hay meadows—Nutt Field, Hen Mead and Nearer Slay Land—bordered by hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerows. Once producing hay for London’s horse traffic, the fields are now managed through traditional hay-cutting and conservation grazing with heritage cattle breeds introduced in 2014. The site supports exceptionally diverse wildflowers including sneezewort, devil’s-bit scabious and seven sedge species, attracting thousands of butterflies and hosting declining skylarks.

High Barnet

High Barnet, also known as Chipping Barnet, is a suburban market town, 10.5 miles north-northwest of Charing Cross. Built around a twelfth-century settlement, the name derives from Old English meaning “land cleared by burning”. The prefix “Chipping” denotes its historic market, chartered by King John in 1199 and still operating today. At approximately 427 feet elevation, it ranks amongst London’s highest points, historically serving as a major coaching stop on the Great North Road.
